A sitter note that actually helps
Put the useful details in one place before you hand over the lead.

Write for someone who is new here
A good sitter note answers the questions you have stopped noticing. Where is the lead? Which word do you use at the door? Who should the sitter call if plans change? Familiar details are often the ones owners forget to explain.
Start with your contact number, an alternative contact, and your veterinarian’s details. Make sure each person listed has agreed to be contacted. Then separate everyday instructions from emergency arrangements.
Describe what you actually do
Use concrete instructions rather than labels. “Use the blue lead hanging by the kitchen door” is more useful than “walk as usual.” Describe your dog’s established routine in your own words. Do not introduce new training or care advice just because a template has a box for it.
- Your contact and agreed backup contact
- Where supplies and records are kept
- The routine and commands your dog already knows
- Your own instructions about interactions, food, and outings
- Veterinary instructions, copied accurately when applicable
Walk through it together
A written note works best with a short handover. Show the sitter where things are, check they can open any shared documents, and invite questions. If medication or special care is involved, agree the instructions with your veterinarian and the sitter rather than asking the sitter to interpret a general checklist.
Update the note when something changes. Give it a date and remove old versions from obvious places so nobody is choosing between two different sets of instructions.
Make it easy to reach
Keep a printed copy where supplies live and send a digital copy if that suits your sitter. Our free sitter-note tool makes a simple text file you can edit and share. The most important feature is that another person can find the answer quickly.
