The sniff-first walk

Give a familiar stretch of path a slower, more curious pace.

15 min, including pausesOn a walkExplore

Suggested stages: Adolescent · 6–24 months; Adult · 2–8 years; Senior · 8+ years.

Let’s try it.

  1. Choose a short stretch away from traffic, livestock and crowded dog areas.

  2. Allow time at safe sniffing spots. Follow their pace without pulling them towards a smell.

  3. Turn back early enough that the whole outing stays comfortable. A shorter loop is fine.

Make it easier

For a senior, try one familiar sniffing spot near home rather than the full time.

What a good moment looks like

A comfortable outing with opportunities to explore and disengage.

Know when to finish

Shorten or skip the walk in unsuitable weather, or if your dog seems tired, worried or uncomfortable. Keep wildlife undisturbed.

Times are suggestions, not targets. Stop sooner if needed. Health restrictions take priority over age filters; ask your vet about activities if your dog has pain or limited mobility.
