One good retrieve

A short, placed retrieve with a proper pause between turns.

5 min, including pausesSecure gardenRetrieve

Suggested stages: Adolescent · 6–24 months; Adult · 2–8 years.

Let’s try it.

  1. Place the toy a few walking steps away while your dog watches. Do not throw it.

  2. Invite them to collect it. Encourage any movement back towards you, without chasing.

  3. Offer a fair exchange if needed. Pause before deciding whether to try another short turn.

Make it easier

Start with the toy beside you and reward interest. A full retrieve can develop over many sessions.

What a good moment looks like

A comfortable pick-up and a willing return, even over one step.

Know when to finish

End if they skid, become frantic or seem uncomfortable. No jumps, sharp turns or forced repetitions.

Times are suggestions, not targets. Stop sooner if needed. Health restrictions take priority over age filters; ask your vet about activities if your dog has pain or limited mobility.
