Let’s try it.
Begin somewhere your dog can already pay attention. Say their name once, in a friendly voice.
When they turn towards you, mark the moment and reward. Eye contact is optional.
Let them return to exploring. Repeat only when they are ready, rather than calling continuously.
Make it easier
Start in a quiet room. Reward a small head turn, and keep puppy turns very brief.
What a good moment looks like
An easy turn towards you, followed by a relaxed return to the activity.
Know when to finish
If they cannot respond, reduce distractions or finish. Do not use the cue to pull them closer to something worrying.
Times are suggestions, not targets. Stop sooner if needed. Health restrictions take priority over age filters; ask your vet about activities if your dog has pain or limited mobility.
