A very fair trade

Practise giving something up without losing all the fun.

3 min, including pausesIndoors / Secure gardenRetrieve

Suggested stages: Puppy · under 6 months; Adolescent · 6–24 months; Adult · 2–8 years; Senior · 8+ years.

Let’s try it.

  1. Begin with a toy your dog is relaxed about holding.

  2. Offer the reward without reaching for the toy. Let them release it voluntarily.

  3. When the toy is free and they have moved to the reward, pick it up. Offer the safe toy back for another easy turn.

Make it easier

Practise with a less exciting toy. Keep the game away from food bowls and other dogs.

What a good moment looks like

Your dog releases willingly and stays comfortable near your hands.

Know when to finish

If they freeze, growl or guard, stop reaching and give space. Seek qualified reward-based help rather than practising removal.

Times are suggestions, not targets. Stop sooner if needed. Health restrictions take priority over age filters; ask your vet about activities if your dog has pain or limited mobility.

Keep the useful bit.

What held their attention? What made it too much? A sentence is enough.
