The blanket break

Make a little space for doing very little. Rest belongs in the routine too.

5 min, including pausesIndoors / Secure gardenSettle

Suggested stages: Puppy · under 6 months; Adolescent · 6–24 months; Adult · 2–8 years; Senior · 8+ years.

Let’s try it.

  1. Choose a quiet spot and place the blanket beside your chair. Your dog is free to leave.

  2. Quietly place a reward on the blanket when they choose to pause there. Avoid repeatedly asking for a down.

  3. Watch for a softer posture or resting head. Reward gently, then allow a quiet break.

Make it easier

Start indoors with a moment of standing quietly. Puppies may need sleep rather than another lesson.

What a good moment looks like

A brief relaxed moment, not a long, rigid stay.

Know when to finish

If your dog fixates on the food or cannot relax, end the exercise and try at a quieter time.

Times are suggestions, not targets. Stop sooner if needed. Health restrictions take priority over age filters; ask your vet about activities if your dog has pain or limited mobility.
